Over 450 applicants submitted essays reflecting on this quote from former Illinois governor and US presidential candidate, Adlai E. Stevenson:

“Law is not a profession at all, but rather a business service station and repair shop.”

Following is an excerpt from Mr. Carter’s winning essay (included here with the author’s permission):

[C]onsistent with Mr. Stevenson’s quote, the workers compensation laws were implemented to repair an inequity that arose in the relationship between businesses and its labor force. Businesses are made profitable by the efforts of its employees and thus, are in a better position to bear the financial burden of ensuring their employees are protected in the event of injury at work. Hence, the law’s primary role continues to be the protection of all its members as their needs constantly evolve.

We are happy to continue our Future Business Leaders Scholarship again for 2023. This time, applicants are asked to write essays about this quote from novelist Edward Cline:
